Eid al-Adha (Arabic: ??? ??????? ??d al-a???,^{[pronunciation 1]} “festival of the sacrifice“), also called Feast of the Sacrifice, the Major Festival,^[1] the Greater Eid, Kurban Bayram (Turkish: Kurban Bayram?; Albanian and Bosnian: kurban-bajram), orEid e Qurban (Persian: ??? ??????), is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to honour the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his young first-born son Ismail (Ishmael)^a as an act of submission to Allah’scommand and his son’s acceptance to being sacrificed, before Allah intervened to provide Abraham with a Lamb to sacrifice instead.^[2] In the lunar Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts for four days.^[3] In the international Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year to year, drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.
